demi & brut
sip on this.
There was a time you’d be hard pressed to get me to drink anything besides Jack Daniel’s Downhome Punch. (yeah, yeah judge your mother). But times have changed, and now I’ve taste-tested everything from headache-inducing cheap vodka to overpriced, but deliciously smooth Japanese Whiskey. But listen, I’ve pushed all that aside because I’ve taken a new lover: champagne. It all started three years ago. I went out for a beautiful date night with my husband. We arrived at the restaurant, and I let him know that I planned to order ALL of the drinks. He nodded in agreement, so it was on.

I ordered two glasses of Riesling, a Moscow Mule and some signature cocktail of the night. But I wasn’t done. I was feeling bold, brave and beyond buzzed so I did what any fancy woman who’s enjoying her date night might do – I had another one.

When the waiter approached the table, I asked for a glass of champagne. My husband, very familiar with my typical date night drinking habits, gave me a look like “girl, what is you doing, you don’t even like champagne.” Meanwhile, I’m like…

Champagne comes. I’m all giddy because: drunk. I take a sip. I’m mesmerized. I waxed poetically about the taste, bubbles and the experience for the rest of the date, during the car ride home, in bed that night and the next day. Since then I’ve explored various brands of sparkling wine from Freixenet and Moet Chandon to Veuve Clicquot and Armand de Brignac Ace of Spade. And I’ve learned that just because it bubbles, it ain’t champagne. But I’m still pretty clueless about champagne and all of its wonders, so that’s why we’re here. I’m taking you along for the ride and sharing my musings on all things champagne: what I love and hate, etiquette, pairings, things that confuse me, things I want to try and things that happen before, during and after I consume champagne.
why demi & brut?
Oh, I’m so glad you asked!
Demi is a play on demi-sec, which refers to a medium dry wine. Demi-sec falls on the sweeter side. It contains between 35-50 grams of residual sugar per serving. Demi is also how you refer to half a bottle of champagne which serves up three glasses of champagne compared to the six drinks in a standard size bottle.
Brut refers to unsweetened, dry to very dry sparkling wine. It’s a lot less sweeter than demi-sec and contains about 0-15 grams of residual sugar per serving. It’s also less calories.
Finally, Demi and Brut reminds me of Demi and Bruce and I’m a huge Bruce Willis fan. (Trivia: Look at the subject line. It’s a Bruce quote from a popular movie. Can you guess the movie?)
who said that?
Each week I’ll feature a rap lyric that makes mention of champagne, and because I’m amazing, I’ll add the songs to a Spotify playlist. Here’s this week’s lyric:

This week I’m toasting to Dr. Christine Blasey Ford for her courage and sacrifice, Kamala Harris for being the queen of questioning and quieting the room, and Dr. Jessica Clemons for creatively bringing mental health awareness to IG.
